6. Policing Issues
The extra police have been a good aspect to the NTER. Communities that previously had no police presence have benefited from this initiative. The only issue has been thatin some communities the new police have been put into scarce community housing, which reduces the potential to provide other services.
The Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk, which was funded as part of the federal 8 point plan to address inhalant substance abuse prior to the NTER, has been able to reduce the supply of illegal substances but only in a cross-border context. We would like to see their capacity increased to allow them to address Alice Springs and remote communities within the NT.
